What Is MEV? Maximal Extractable Value Meaning in Crypto

MEV: MEV (maximal extractable value) is the extra profit that block producers and bots can take by including, excluding or reordering transactions in a block.

Key takeaways

  • MEV means maximal extractable value: the extra profit available from the choice and order of transactions in a block.
  • The term first meant 'miner extractable value'; after Ethereum moved to proof of stake, validators took the miners' role and the name changed.
  • For memecoin traders, the most common MEV is the sandwich attack, which gives you a worse price on a buy or sell.

MEV (maximal extractable value) is the extra profit that block producers and bots can take by choosing which transactions go into a block and in what order. For memecoin traders, MEV usually means bots that trade just before and after your swap and take part of its value.

How MEV works

Ethereum.org defines MEV as "the maximum value that can be extracted from block production in excess of the standard block reward and gas fees" (Ethereum.org). The term first meant "miner extractable value". After Ethereum moved to proof of stake, validators took that role and the name changed to "maximal".

Specialized bots, called searchers, watch for pending trades and pay to place their own transactions in the best position. On Solana, Jito's block engine accepts bundles of up to 5 transactions with a tip, and offers MEV protection and sandwich mitigation for regular sends (Jito docs).

Example: you send a large buy of a thin memecoin. A searcher sees it, buys first, lets your order push the price up, and then sells. That is a sandwich attack.

Why it matters for traders

MEV turns your slippage tolerance into someone else's profit. Keep the tolerance low and split large orders. Our Telegram trading bots hub compares the tools traders use for memecoin trades.
