What Is a Private Key in Crypto? Meaning and Safety

Private key: A private key is the secret code that signs transactions for one wallet address; whoever holds it can move every token in that address.

Key takeaways

  • A private key is the secret code that signs transactions for one wallet address; whoever has it can move all funds in that address.
  • A seed phrase generates many private keys; a private key controls only one account, but losing either one means losing the funds.
  • Some trading platforms do not let you export your key: GMGN's docs say you cannot export the private key of a GMGN wallet.

What a private key means

A private key is the secret code that controls a wallet address. Ethereum.org's glossary describes it as a secret code that proves you own your digital money and lets you spend it. If someone else has the key, they own the funds too.

How it works

Your wallet uses the private key to sign each transaction. The network checks the signature against your public address, and then it accepts the transfer. The key itself never needs to go on-chain. Most wallets generate the keys from a seed phrase: one phrase, many keys, one key per account.

Example: you create a new wallet in a Telegram trading bot. The bot generates a private key, keeps a copy on its servers, and signs your memecoin buys for you. That is fast, but it means the bot can also move the funds. If the bot is hacked or shuts down, the only way to save the funds is an exported key, if the bot lets you export it.

Why it matters for traders

  • Custody: a key that only you hold is self-custody. A key that a platform holds is trust in that platform.
  • Export: check that you can export the key before you fund a bot wallet. Our GMGN review notes that GMGN does not allow it.
  • Split wallets: keep a small trading wallet for bots and your main funds in a wallet whose key never leaves your device. Compare bot custody in our Telegram trading bots hub.
