Key takeaways
- A KOL in crypto is a key opinion leader: an influencer whose posts move prices. The Tie found “significant and positive token movements” in the hours after posts by 310 influencers (CoinDesk).
- Many KOL calls are paid or pre-bought: two traders said they got 3 million FLOG tokens to promote FLOG (Decrypt), and CoinDesk reports “KOL rounds” with discounted tokens, often with a large unlock at launch.
- KOL wallets are often public on-chain: Arkham tags X users with over 100,000 followers as Key Opinion Leaders, and GMGN lets you track KOL and smart money trades in real time.

A KOL in crypto is a key opinion leader: an influencer on X or YouTube whose posts can move a coin’s price. Many KOLs buy early or get paid to post, so a KOL call is often an ad, not advice. To see what KOL wallets buy and sell, read our GMGN review.
How it works
A KOL posts a “call”: a coin name or its contract address, plus a reason to buy. Followers buy, and the price goes up. The data firm The Tie studied posts by 310 influencers about the top 175 coins over 90 days. It found “significant and positive token movements” in the hours after the posts (CoinDesk report (opens in a new tab)).
A KOL can make money from that move in three ways:
| How the KOL earns | What happens | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Paid post | The project pays the KOL, often in tokens, to post about the coin. | Two traders said that they got 3 million FLOG tokens to promote FLOG. |
| KOL round | The KOL buys before launch at a discount. A large part of the tokens often unlocks on launch day. | One influencer told CoinDesk that most of these deals are not properly disclosed. |
| Hype, then a sell | Insiders sell into the buyers that the hype brings in. | A leaked SHAR pitch deck claimed “50+ tier 1 KOLs” (some named influencers denied a role). SHAR hit a $54 million market cap. Then wallets sold $3 million at once, and the price fell 96.3% in about two seconds. |

This is the main risk for you. When you buy after a KOL call, you buy after the KOL. If the KOL sells, your buy can be their exit. Read what exit liquidity means before you follow a call.
Every buy and sell on a blockchain is public, so you can watch a KOL’s wallet when someone links it to the KOL. In March 2025, Arkham added a Key Opinion Leader tag for X users with over 100,000 followers (The Block report (opens in a new tab)). The tag covers only the wallets that someone linked to a KOL. A KOL with a large wallet acts like a whale: one sale can move a small coin.
What to do next
- You saw a KOL call: check the contract, the top holders and the KOL’s wallet before you buy. Our rug pull checklist shows the checks.
- You want to copy a KOL: copy trading repeats a wallet’s buys and sells in your own wallet. Use a small amount and a sell limit, and compare tools in our best copy trading bots list.
- You want to see what KOLs buy: GMGN’s docs tell you to “follow smart money and key opinion leaders (KOLs)” and track their trades in real time (GMGN smart money docs (opens in a new tab)). A GMGN Telegram bot also posts smart money wallet alerts in Telegram groups (GMGN alert docs (opens in a new tab)). GMGN charges 1% per trade (GMGN fee docs (opens in a new tab)), and you cannot export its wallet keys (GMGN wallet docs (opens in a new tab)). Keep only trading money there.
Bottom line
A KOL is a crypto influencer whose calls move prices, and that is why projects pay them. Treat every KOL call as an ad: check the wallet, buy small and plan your sell before you buy. For more words like KOL, see our crypto slang guide.
