Research review: based on official docs and public data. Our hands-on test is pending, and this page will be updated after it.

Key takeaways

  • Phantom charges a 0.85% fee on most swaps, plus the network fee; deposits to the perps balance carry no Phantom fee.
  • Phantom is self-custodial: you hold the seed phrase, and Phantom says it never has access to your funds.
  • Phantom's scam detection simulates transactions and warns you before you approve a malicious one; the previews were built with Blowfish, which Phantom acquired in November 2024.
  • Perps on Phantom cost 0.095% per trade (0.05% Phantom plus 0.045% Hyperliquid) and are not available in the US or the UK.
  • We found no hack of Phantom's own systems; the 2022 Solana drain of about $4 million was traced to the Slope wallet.

Our verdict

Is it safe? Yes, for a hot wallet. Phantom is self-custodial, scans transactions for scams before you sign, and we found no hack of Phantom itself; a 2025 lawsuit alleging a key-storage flaw is unproven and Phantom denies it.

Best for: Memecoin traders who want one self-custody wallet for Solana swaps, scam warnings and perps, on mobile, browser and desktop

What we like

  • Self-custodial: Phantom says it never has access to your funds
  • Scam detection flags malicious transactions before you approve them
  • 0.85% swap fee, lower than the 1% of many Telegram bots
  • One wallet for Solana, Ethereum, Base, Bitcoin, Polygon and more, with Ledger support
  • Perps on Hyperliquid at 0.095% per trade, plus a desktop Terminal for token discovery

What we don't like

  • No sniping, copy trading or auto-sell tools like a trading bot
  • Terminal has market orders only; limit orders are on the mobile app
  • Phantom ended Sui support on 24 September 2026
  • Perps are not available in the US, the UK and other territories

Our Phantom wallet review in short: Phantom is a self-custody crypto wallet for Solana, Ethereum, Base, Bitcoin and more, with in-app swaps at a 0.85% fee and scam warnings before you sign. It is safe for a hot wallet: we found no hack of Phantom itself. We rate it 4.0/5 from research, and we earn nothing from Phantom.

Phantom wallet in one paragraph

Phantom is a self-custody wallet. Its website says: "Self-custodial means you control your funds. We never have access." You can buy and sell tokens, find trending tokens, trade perps and prediction markets, and connect a Ledger. Phantom's supported networks page lists Solana, Ethereum, Base, Polygon, BNB Chain, Bitcoin (Native SegWit and Taproot), HyperEVM, Robinhood Chain and Arc. Phantom ended Sui support on 24 September 2026: Sui assets stay on chain, but you cannot view, send or swap them in Phantom. For memecoins, most traders use it on Solana.

Fees

  • Example: a $500 memecoin buy costs $4.25 in Phantom fees, before the network fee. Compare totals with our fee calculator.
  • Gasless swaps: if you have no SOL for gas, Phantom can pay it and deducts a flat fee from the token you trade.
  • Perps fees apply to the full position size, not to your margin. At 50x, $1,000 of margin is a $50,000 position.

Safety and incidents

  • Custody: Phantom is self-custodial. You hold the seed phrase, and Phantom says it never has access to your funds (Phantom security).
  • Scam detection: Phantom says its scam detection "flags malicious transactions instantly". Its security post describes transaction previews powered by Blowfish that warn you before you approve a drain or a call to a blacklisted program. The post also says the previews look for transactions that try to evade the simulation.
  • Blowfish: Phantom acquired the crypto firewall company Blowfish in November 2024, according to The Block.
  • Phishing blocklist: Phantom keeps an open source blocklist of malicious domains and warns you if you connect to one.
  • Spam tokens: Phantom's help page on unfamiliar tokens says an asset you do not recognize is usually spam. Report it to hide it, and do not follow its links.
  • Frozen tokens: the swap help page says a frozen Solana token cannot be sent, sold or swapped, and Phantom cannot unfreeze it. Check the freeze authority before you buy.
  • Audits and bug bounty: Phantom says top firms audited its code, and white hat hackers can get up to $50,000 for bugs that could lose user funds.

Incidents we found:

  • Demonic bug (2021–2022): a Halborn researcher found a flaw that could expose a recovery phrase imported into browser extension wallets, including Phantom, MetaMask and Brave. Phantom says fixes started in January 2022 and users were protected by April 2022 (Phantom blog). Phantom did not report lost funds.
  • Slope drain (August 2022): about $4.08 million left 9,230 Solana wallets. Phantom said its systems were not compromised, and the affected Phantom users had imported keys to or from a non-Phantom wallet. Developers traced the drain to the Slope wallet (The Block).
  • TRUMP launch traffic (January 2025): Phantom said it saw more than 8,000,000 requests per minute, and warned that transactions might not go through on the first try (Decrypt).
  • Lawsuit (April 2025): 14 plaintiffs sued Phantom in New York after a theft of more than $500,000 in WIENER tokens. They allege that Phantom kept private keys unencrypted in browser memory. Phantom said the claims are "entirely without merit" (Decrypt). We found no ruling.

What this means for you: we found no hack of Phantom's own systems. Most losses come from phishing, malware and fake sites. Keep only trading money in a hot wallet, and use a Ledger for larger amounts.

Features for memecoin traders

  • Swaps: buy and sell tokens in the app. You can set slippage to Auto, 0.5%, 1%, 2% or a custom value from 0.1% to 30%, and set a Solana priority fee from 0.00001 to 1 SOL (swap settings).
  • Terminal: a desktop trading page at trade.phantom.com with TradingView charts, Quick Buy, wallet tracking, take-profit and stop-loss for perps, lists of new and soon-to-list tokens, and presets for slippage, priority fee and MEV protection (Terminal help). Terminal has market orders only; limit orders are on the mobile app.
  • Discovery: trending tokens among Phantom users and top traders.
  • Perps: long or short on Hyperliquid for crypto, commodities, stocks and indices. The Block reported the July 2025 launch with up to 40x leverage. Perps do not work with Ledger wallets.
  • Other: prediction markets, Phantom Cash and a prepaid Visa card for spending, and Ledger support.

Where other tools are better

  • Sniping and auto-sell: we found no sniping, copy trading or auto-sell rules in Phantom's help center. A Telegram bot such as Trojan or BasedBot does this. Locke works with BasedBot; it is scored with the same methodology. See the BasedBot review and our sniper bots ranking.
  • A full web terminal: Axiom and GMGN have more discovery and tracking tools. Axiom also has limit orders on the web.
  • MEV settings in the app: Phantom's swap settings page for the app lists slippage, priority fee and tip, but does not mention MEV protection. Only the desktop Terminal lists an MEV protection preset.
  • The simplest first buy: if you want to pay by card in one app, see the Fomo review.

Many traders use both: Phantom as the safe home wallet, and a terminal or bot for fast trades. See how to buy memecoins and the best memecoin trading platforms.
