Key takeaways

  • Memecoin trading is a six-step loop: pick a chain, fund a wallet, check the contract, size the position, set take-profit and stop-loss orders, then exit.
  • Size each trade from the loss you accept: with a $1,000 budget, a 2% risk limit and a -30% stop loss, the position is about $67.
  • A stop loss is not a guarantee: in a rug pull or a thin pool, the sell can fill far below the trigger, so the position size is your real protection.
  • BasedBot does every step in one Telegram bot: its docs list 16 networks, take-profit, stop-loss and trailing-stop orders, limit orders by market cap and a 1% fee.
  • Before every buy, check mint and freeze authority, top holders, liquidity and the dev wallet, then test a small sell.

Memecoin trading means buying small, very volatile tokens and selling them with a plan, usually through a trading bot or a web terminal. The full workflow has six steps: pick a chain, fund a wallet, check the contract, size the position, set take-profit and stop-loss orders, then exit. We use BasedBot as the worked example, because one bot does every step on several chains.

Step 1: pick a chain

The chain decides which memecoins you can buy, what each transaction costs and which tools work. Solana has the largest memecoin market, with launchpads such as pump.fun. Base, BNB Chain and Ethereum have their own launchpads, for example Clanker and Zora on Base and Four.Meme on BNB Chain.

Start with one chain. You learn its tools, its fees and its scams faster. A multi-chain bot helps when you want to add a second chain later without a new app.

BasedBot's supported networks page (opens in a new tab) lists 16 networks, including Ethereum, Base, BNB Chain, Solana, Avalanche, Arbitrum and HyperEVM. On Solana, it lists Pump.Fun / PumpSwap, Raydium, Orca, Meteora and Jupiter among its routes. The multi-chain page (opens in a new tab) says that the bot detects the chain from the token address you paste, so you do not pick a network first.

If you trade only on Solana, Trojan is a strong alternative. If you prefer a browser terminal with charts, look at Axiom, which lists Solana, BNB Chain and Ethereum.

Step 2: fund a trading wallet

Keep your trading money apart from your savings. Use a separate wallet for trading, and send it only the amount you plan to trade this week.

  1. 1

Open the bot from an official link

Fake Telegram bots copy the names of real ones. The official BasedBot handle is @based_eth_bot, per the setup guide (opens in a new tab). You can also use our official links page.
  2. 2

    Type /start

The main menu opens. The bot gives you a wallet address.
  3. 3

    Create or import a wallet

Tap Wallet or type /wallet, then create a new wallet or import one with its private key, as the wallet guide (opens in a new tab) describes. Store your key offline.
  4. 4

Send a small amount of the native coin

Tap the wallet address to copy it, then send SOL, ETH or BNB from an exchange or another wallet. Keep a small extra amount for network fees.
  5. 5

Move funds between chains if necessary

Type /bridge to move native coins from one chain to another. The bridge page (opens in a new tab) says it moves native currencies only.

BasedBot is self-custody: the security page (opens in a new tab) says the private key is not stored in clear text, and the team never asks for it. The web app at basedbot.app has an "Export Key" button in the Portfolio wallet panel.

Step 3: check the contract before you buy

Most memecoin losses happen before the first trade, when you buy a fake token or a trap. Do these checks every time. They take a few minutes.

  1. Contract address: copy the contract address from the project's official X account or website. Never buy by name or ticker.
  2. Authorities (Solana): check that mint authority and freeze authority are revoked. If not, the team can print new tokens or freeze yours.
  3. Top holders: if the top 10 wallets hold a large share of the supply, they can dump on you.
  4. Dev wallet and bundles: a dev wallet that holds a lot, or many wallets that bought in the same block (bundling), are red flags.
  5. Liquidity: a small liquidity pool means a high price impact when you sell.
  6. Taxes and honeypots: on EVM chains, check the buy and sell tax. A honeypot lets you buy but not sell.
  7. Sell path: buy a small amount first and test a sell before you add more.

BasedBot shows much of this data. The Audit button (opens in a new tab) asks partner Serialized Labs for a contract analysis (up to 3 minutes) and shows buy, sell and transfer taxes. The web app token page (opens in a new tab) shows Top 10 Holders %, Dev Holding %, Snipers, Insiders, Bundlers and LP Burned. You can also blacklist tokens and developer addresses in /settings.

The full red-flag list and real cases are in our guide to how rug pulls work. For new pump.fun coins, read is pump.fun safe first.

Step 4: size the position

Position size is your most important risk control. A stop loss can fail in a crash; a small position cannot hurt you more than its size.

Use this rule: decide the loss you accept on one trade, then divide it by the distance to your stop loss.

Position size = (budget × risk per trade) ÷ stop-loss distance

Trading budgetRisk per tradeMax lossStop lossPosition size
$5002%$10-30%About $33
$1,0002%$20-30%About $67
$1,0001%$10-50%$20
$5,0002%$100-40%$250

These are example numbers to show the math, not results. Many traders use 1–2% risk per trade. With memecoins, also assume that any single coin can go to zero, so never put a large share of the budget in one token.

Fees count too. BasedBot charges 1% per transaction (opens in a new tab), so a buy and a sell cost about 2% of the position before cashback. On a $67 position, that is about $1.34. Add slippage and network fees, and check the total with our fee calculator.

In BasedBot, set your buy presets per chain in /settings, so one tap buys your normal size. The buying guide (opens in a new tab) also shows the price impact, slippage and gas controls on the token monitor.

Step 5: set take-profit and stop-loss orders

Set your exits when you buy, not when the price moves. A plan you wrote down beats a decision you make in a panic.

BasedBot has five kinds of exit orders, per its take-profit and stop-loss page (opens in a new tab), its limit orders page (opens in a new tab) and its Dev Sell page (opens in a new tab):

OrderTriggerTypical use
Take profit (TP)Price rises by a set %Sell part of the position at a gain
Stop loss (SL)Price falls by a set %Cap the loss
Trailing stop lossPrice falls a set % from its peakKeep a gain while the price goes up
Limit sellMarket cap rises to a targetSell at a market-cap level
Dev SellThe developer sellsSell 100% of the token at once
  1. 1

    Open the token monitor

Paste the contract address, or open the token from /manage.
  2. 2

    Turn on TP and SL

Tap the TP and SL toggles (green is on). Set the target %, for example TP +50% and SL -30%, as in the docs' example.
  3. 3

    Set the % to sell

The default is 100%. To take profit in parts, set 50% at the first target and add a second order later.
  4. 4

Add a limit sell or a trailing stop

Tap Orders, then Add Order, and choose Limit Sell with a market-cap target, or use the trailing stop loss.
  5. 5

    Save your defaults

Put your usual TP and SL in /settings, so every new buy gets them. Check open orders with /orders.

A common plan is to sell enough at the first target to get your stake back, then let the rest run with a trailing stop. Pick numbers you can follow, and write them down before you buy.

Trojan and Axiom also offer limit orders; see the BasedBot vs Trojan comparison for the differences.

Step 6: exit, claim cashback and review

When an order triggers, BasedBot notifies you. To sell by hand, type /manage, tap the token and choose a sell percentage, as the positions guide (opens in a new tab) describes. The ❌ button only hides a position; it does not sell.

After you sell:

  • Claim cashback: BasedBot pays cashback in the native coin of each chain. Type /cashback once you have $10 or more on a chain, per the rewards page (opens in a new tab).
  • Log the trade: write down the entry, the exit, the fees and why you bought. The "Trade report" button makes a PnL card for your records.
  • Take profits out: move gains back to a wallet that is not connected to any bot.
  • Review weekly: count how many trades followed your plan. The plan matters more than any single result.

With code START, BasedBot gives 10–50% cashback instead of the standard 5–25%, per our partner agreement. That makes the effective fee 0.5–0.9%. See the BasedBot referral code page for the details.

The docs warn that Turbo mode for sniping removes all safety checks. Do not use it until you understand each check it skips.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Do not trade without an exit plan. Set take-profit and stop-loss orders at the time of the buy.
  • Do not size by excitement. Size from the loss you accept, not from the gain you hope for.
  • Do not chase green candles. Buying after a large pump often means you buy from the early holders.
  • Do not buy by name or ticker. Fake tokens copy both. Use the contract address from an official source.
  • Do not answer DMs. BasedBot's support page (opens in a new tab) says the team never DMs first and never asks for your key.
  • Do not leave all funds in a bot wallet. Keep only trading money there.

Bottom line

Memecoin trading works best as a fixed routine: one chain, a small funded wallet, a contract check, a position sized from your risk, and exit orders set at the buy. BasedBot does all six steps in one bot on 16 networks, with a 1% fee and cashback. If you trade only on Solana, also look at Trojan. Start with the beginner's guide to buying memecoins if this is your first trade.
